RESUMO

Reducing high concentrations of pollutants such as heavy metals, pesticides, drugs, and dyes from water is an emerging necessity. We evaluated the use of Luffa cylindrica (Lc) as a natural non-conventional adsorbent to remove azo dye mixture (ADM) from water. The capacity of Lc at three different doses (2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 g/L) was evaluated using three concentrations of azo dyes (0.125, 0.250, and 0.500 g/L). The removal percent (R%), maximum adsorption capacity (Qm), isotherm and kinetics adsorption models, and pH influence were evaluated, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were performed. The maximum R% was 70.8% for 10.0 g L-1Lc and 0.125 g L-1 ADM. The Qm of Lc was 161.29 mg g-1. Adsorption by Lc obeys a Langmuir isotherm and occurs through the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Statistical analysis showed that the adsorbent dose, the azo dye concentration, and contact time significantly influenced R% and the adsorption capacity. These findings indicate that Lc could be used as a natural non-conventional adsorbent to reduce ADM in water, and it has a potential application in the pretreatment of wastewaters.

RESUMO

Large-scale diffusion MRI tractography remains a significant challenge. Users must orchestrate a complex sequence of instructions that requires many software packages with complex dependencies and high computational costs. We developed MaPPeRTrac, an edge-centric tractography pipeline that simplifies and accelerates this process in a wide range of high-performance computing (HPC) environments. It fully automates either probabilistic or deterministic tractography, starting from a subject's magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, including structural and diffusion MRI images, to the edge density image (EDI) of their structural connectomes. Dependencies are containerized with Singularity (now called Apptainer) and decoupled from code to enable rapid prototyping and modification. Data derivatives are organized with the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) to ensure that they are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable following FAIR principles. The pipeline takes full advantage of HPC resources using the Parsl parallel programming framework, resulting in the creation of connectome datasets of unprecedented size. MaPPeRTrac is publicly available and tested on commercial and scientific hardware, so it can accelerate brain connectome research for a broader user community. To improve palivizumab administration in high-risk infants with congenital heart disease to 80% over 2 years at an academic children's heart center. A multidisciplinary team at our institution implemented a series of interventions over a 2-year prior. Pediatric cardiac patients were identified for palivizumab eligibility, and a baseline rate of administration was obtained. A series of communication and documentation-based interventions were implemented over the course of the next 2 years. Palivizumab eligible infants (n = 114) were determined based on guidelines after review of diagnosis code, oxygen saturation, and medications. Doses of palivizumab were tracked via the electronic health record. The primary outcome measures were the rate of monthly palivizumab doses administered per the number of eligible months and the percentage of infants who received at least 80% of eligible doses during the respiratory syncytial virus season. The rate of monthly palivizumab doses increased from 57.6% during the baseline period to 78.4% during the final year of the project (p = 0.02). The percentage of infants who received 80% of eligible doses increased from 42.1 to 60% but was not statistically significant (p = 0.20). Interventions focused on properly identifying and tracking infants eligible for palivizumab treatment significantly increased the rates of administration.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the postnatal outcome of children with antenatal colonic hyperechogenicity, currently considered as a sign of lysinuria-cystinuria, but which may also be a sign of other disorders with a more severe prognosis. METHOD: We carried out a French multi-centric retrospective study via 15 Multidisciplinary Center for Prenatal Diagnosis from January 2011 to January 2021. We included pregnancies for which fetal colonic hyperechogenicity had been demonstrated. We collected the investigations performed during pregnancy and at birth as well as the main clinical features of the mother and the child. We then established the prevalence of pathologies such as lysinuria-cystinuria (LC), hypotonia-cystinuria syndrome (HC), or lysinuric protein intolerance (LPI). RESULTS: Among the 33 cases of colonic hyperechogenicity collected, and after exclusion of those lost to follow-up, we identified 63% of children with lysinuria-cystinuria, 8% with lysinuric rotein intolerance, and 4% with hypotonia-cystinuria syndrome. CONCLUSION: Management of prenatal hyperechoic colon should include a specialized consultation with a clinical geneticist to discuss further investigations, which could include invasive amniotic fluid sampling for molecular diagnosis. A better understanding of diagnoses and prognosis should improve medical counseling and guide parental decision making.

(analítico) Las investigaciones de las representaciones sociales de estudiantes acerca de los problemas contemporáneos representan un espacio fundamental de exploración. Este estudio busca analizar las representaciones de estudiantes de educación primaria chilenos y argentinos sobre el conflicto entre los Estados de Chile, Argentina y el pueblo mapuche. La investigación es cualitativa, con un enfoque de teoría fundamentada y los datos recolectados a través de grupos focales en escuelas chilenas y argentinas. El análisis realizado se basa en los procedimientos del paradigma de la codificación, con el motivo de indagar de manera procesual y estructural las representaciones sociales. Los resultados revelan el rol que otorgan los estudiantes a la enseñanza de la historia. Las conclusiones sostienen que la enseñanza de la historia no contribuye a la comprensión de este problema.


(analytical) Research on social representations constructed by students in relation to contemporary problems represents a fundamental space for investigative exploration. This study sought to analyze the representations of Chilean and Argentine primary school students regarding the "conflict" between the Chile, Argentina and the Mapuche people. The research was qualitative and used a grounded theory approach. The data was collected through holding focus groups in Chilean and Argentine schools. The analysis involved the use of coding paradigm procedures in order to investigate social representations in a procedural and structural way. The results reveal the role that students give to the teaching of History. The conclusions identify that the teaching of History does not contribute to the understanding of this problem.


(analítico) Este estudo examina o conhecimento sobre as propriedades formais e a função referencial de desenho, escrita e numerais que mães, filhos e filhas (2 anos e meio e 4 anos) apresentados em tarefa de produção conjunta. O método comparativo constante foi utilizado para a construção do sistema de codificação; se analisou mediante provas não paramétricas. As duplas do grupo de 2 anos e meio conversaram sobre a função referencial dos três sistemas, especialmente do desenho. No grupo de 4 anos aumentaram o interesse pela escrita, a consideração das propriedades formais da escrita e dos numerais e as produções independentes de desenho e escrita. O estudo mostrou a produção gráfica conjunta como uma interação educacional na família que estimula a apropriação precoce de sistemas de representação externa.

Genome-wide polygenic risk scores (GW-PRS) have been reported to have better predictive ability than PRS based on genome-wide significance thresholds across numerous traits. We compared the predictive ability of several GW-PRS approaches to a recently developed PRS of 269 established prostate cancer risk variants from multi-ancestry GWAS and fine-mapping studies (PRS 269 ). GW-PRS models were trained using a large and diverse prostate cancer GWAS of 107,247 cases and 127,006 controls used to develop the multi-ancestry PRS 269 . Resulting models were independently tested in 1,586 cases and 1,047 controls of African ancestry from the California/Uganda Study and 8,046 cases and 191,825 controls of European ancestry from the UK Biobank and further validated in 13,643 cases and 210,214 controls of European ancestry and 6,353 cases and 53,362 controls of African ancestry from the Million Veteran Program. In the testing data, the best performing GW-PRS approach had AUCs of 0.656 (95% CI=0.635-0.677) in African and 0.844 (95% CI=0.840-0.848) in European ancestry men and corresponding prostate cancer OR of 1.83 (95% CI=1.67-2.00) and 2.19 (95% CI=2.14-2.25), respectively, for each SD unit increase in the GW-PRS. However, compared to the GW-PRS, in African and European ancestry men, the PRS 269 had larger or similar AUCs (AUC=0.679, 95% CI=0.659-0.700 and AUC=0.845, 95% CI=0.841-0.849, respectively) and comparable prostate cancer OR (OR=2.05, 95% CI=1.87-2.26 and OR=2.21, 95% CI=2.16-2.26, respectively). Findings were similar in the validation data. This investigation suggests that current GW-PRS approaches may not improve the ability to predict prostate cancer risk compared to the multi-ancestry PRS 269 constructed with fine-mapping.

Transplantation is a clinical procedure that treats a variety of diseases yet is unattainable for many patients due to a nationwide organ shortage and the harsh side effects of chronic immune suppression. Xenografted pig organs are an attractive alternative to traditional allografts and would provide an endless supply of transplantable tissue, but transplants risk rejection by the recipient's immune system. An essential component of the rejection immune response is the complement system. Sertoli cells, an immunoregulatory testicular cell, survive complement as xenografts long term without any immune suppressants. We hypothesized that exposure to the xenogeneic complement influences Sertoli cell gene expression of other accommodation factors that contribute to their survival; thus, the purpose of this study was to describe these potential changes in gene expression. RNA sequencing of baseline neonatal pig Sertoli cells (NPSC) as compared to NPSC after exposure to normal human serum (NHS, containing complement) revealed 62 significantly differentially expressed genes (DEG) that affect over 30 pathways involved in immune regulation, cell survival, and transplant accommodation. Twelve genes of interest were selected for further study, and Sertoli cell protein expression of CCL2 and the accommodation factor A20 were confirmed for the first time. Functional pathway analyses were conducted in NPSC and three biological clusters were revealed as being considerably affected by NHS exposure: innate immune signaling, cytokine signaling, and T cell regulation. Better understanding of the interaction of Sertoli cells with complement in a xenograft environment may reveal the mechanisms behind immune-privileged systems to increase graft viability.

The pollution generated by the heavy metals (HM) contained in mining wastes (tailings) is a worldwide recognized environmental concern. Due to the persistence, toxicity, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification capacity through the food chains, the release of HM into the environment causes negative effects on human health and the ecosystems. Wigandia urens Kunth (Boraginaceae) is a plant species that naturally establishes and grows in tailings and is consumed by the grasshopper Sphenarium purpurascens Charpentier (Orthoptera: Pyrgomorphidae). HM accumulation in this plant and their subsequent consumption by defoliating insects allow these contaminants to enter the food webs and favor their biomagnification. This study evaluated the effect of HM bioaccumulation in the leaf tissue of W. urens on the characteristics associated with its physical defense against herbivores and the effect of HM exposure on population parameters of grasshoppers through their ontogeny under controlled conditions. The results showed a significant increase in leaf hardness and in the number of simple and glandular trichomes in the leaves of W. urens growing on mine tailing substrate compared to those grown on the control substrate without HM. W. urens individuals growing on mine tailing substrate presented the following heavy metal foliar bioaccumulation pattern: Fe > Zn > Pb > Cu. These metals were also bioaccumulated in individuals of S. purpurascens fed with leaves of the plants exposed to mine tailings, observing differences in their concentration pattern through ontogeny. Grasshoppers fed on leaf tissue containing HM showed higher mortality in the first two developmental instars and lower body biomass throughout their ontogeny in comparison to the individuals fed on leaf tissue of plants growing on the control treatment without HM. In conclusion, W. urens is a species with phytoremediation potential for soils contaminated with HM, since it is naturally established in contaminated sites, has a wide geographic distribution, and bioaccumulates significant amounts of different HM. Furthermore, as was observed in this report, the W. urens physical and chemical defense against herbivores was enhanced by HM exposure, compromising the fitness and development of the herbivore S. purpurascens through its ontogeny and thus interrupting the entry and transfer of heavy metal through the food chain.

The complement system is an important component of transplant rejection. Sertoli cells, an immune regulatory testicular cell, survive long-term when transplanted across immunological barriers; thus, understanding the mechanisms behind this unique survival would be of great benefit to the transplantation field. This study focused on Sertoli cell inhibition of complement as relevant in xenotransplantation. Neonatal pig Sertoli cells (NPSCs) survived activated human complement in vitro while neonatal pig islet (NPI) aggregates and pig aortic endothelial cell (PAEC) survival were diminished to about 65% and 12%, respectively. PAECs cultured in NPSC-conditioned media and human complement demonstrated a 200% increase in survival suggesting that NPSCs secrete complement-inhibiting substances that confer protection. Bioinformatic and molecular analyses identified 21 complement inhibitors expressed by NPSCs with several significantly increased in NPSCs compared to NPIs or PAECs. Lastly, RNA sequencing revealed that NPSCs express 25 other complement factors including cascade components and receptors. Overall, this study identified the most comprehensive Sertoli cell complement signature to date and indicates that the expression of a variety of complement inhibitors ensures a proper regulation of complement through redundant inhibition points. Understanding the regulation of the complement system should be further investigated for extending xenograft viability.

Dodonaea viscosa (L.) Jacq. is a plant with a wide distribution that expands throughout almost all Mexican territory and is used in traditional medicine to treat many ailments. This species has been found associated with polluted areas, including mine tailings. Huautla, Morelos, Mexico, was a metallurgic district where mining activities generated 780,000 tons of waste rich in metals, deposited at 500 m from the town without any treatment; this situation has been related to different environmental threats and human health risks. The study was carried out for 18 months on seedlings developed under greenhouse conditions in two treatments: control substrate and mine tailings substrate. The concentration of six metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn) was measured through atomic absorption spectrophotometry in plant tissues, roots, and leaves. Effects of metal exposure were analyzed by size, micro-morphological character changes, and genetic damage in foliar tissue using the comet assay. The results showed significantly higher metal concentrations in the roots and leaves of individuals growing on the mine tailing substrate in comparison to the same plants tissues growing on control substrate. Positive and significant relationships between exposure time and metal concentration in roots and leaves, and between metal bioaccumulation in leaves and genetic damage were registered. Four out of six micro-morphological and size characters evaluated decreased significantly in exposed plants, except for stomatic index and root biomass. The most important metals in terms of the number of significantly affected micro-morphological and size characters showed the next pattern: Fe > Cd = Cr = Pb > Cu > Zn. D. viscosa is an efficient accumulator of Cu, Cd, Fe, Pb, and Zn in its root and leaf tissues. Overall, metal translocation factors in exposed D. viscosa plants showed the following pattern: Zn > Cu > Cd. We conclude that D. viscosa has the potential to phytoextract (Zn, Cu, and Cd), and phytostabilize (Cu, Cd, Fe, Pb, and Zn) metals from polluted soils, and along with its abundance, natural establishment in mine tailings, high levels of metal translocation, and bioconcentration factors, without affecting plant development, it can be an ideal candidate for phytoremediation of metal polluted soils.

Phytoremediation is a cost-effective technique to remediate heavy metal (HM) polluted sites. However, the toxic effects of HM can limit plant establishment and development, reducing phytoremediation effectiveness. Therefore, the addition of organic amendments to mine wastes, such as biochar, improves the establishment of plants and reduces the bioavailability of toxic HM and its subsequent absorption by plants. Prosopis laevigata can establish naturally in mine tailings and accumulate different HM; however, these individuals show morphological and genetic damage. In this study, the effect of biochar on HM bioaccumulation in roots and aerial tissues, HM translocation, morphological characters and plant growth were evaluated, after three and six months of exposure. Plants grown on mine tailings with biochar presented significantly higher values for most of the evaluated characters, in respect to plants that grew on mine tailing substrate. Biochar addition reduced the bioaccumulation and translocation of Cu, Pb, and Cd, while it favored the translocation of essential metals such as Fe and Mn. The addition of biochar from agro-industrial residues to mine tailings improves the establishment of plants with potential to phytoextract and phytostabilize metals from polluted soils. Using biochar and heavy metal accumulating plants constitutes an assisted phytostabilization strategy with great potential for HM polluted sites such as Cd and Pb.

Introduction: In patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVF) are of multifactorial etiology. The main mechanism is spontaneous and therefore most are asymptomatic. The presence of VF has an impact on the quality of life of patients, and consequently on morbidity and mortality, therefore it should be systematically evaluated in this population, especially when associated factors have been reported. The main objective of this study was to identify clinical characteristics for osteoporosis and poor prognosis in rheumatoid arthritis that could be associated with the development of osteoporotic vertebral fractures identified in the lateral chest X-ray of asymptomatic patients with RA. The secondary objectives were to present the frequency, location, and severity of the fractures, as well as the inter and intra-observer correlation, when analyzing the radiographs. Methodology: Patients with a diagnosis of RA were included, with a lateral chest X-ray and indication dissimilar to spinal symptoms. The mean age was 58 years (IQR 21-88). Three researchers evaluated 151 images in a sequenced and standardized manner using the Algorithm-Base Qualitative approach (ABQ) and Genant methods. Variables associated with the presence of osteoporosis and poor prognosis in RA were identified. Subsequently, a multivariate analysis was carried out to find an association with the presence of VF in this population. Results: We found 39 fractures in 32/151 patients. Identifying multiple fractures in 5 of them. The prevalence of osteoporotic vertebral fractures was 21.2%. The distribution of fractures was mainly at the level of T5, T8 and T9, with a predominance of Genant grade 1 in 46%. In the multivariate analysis, age, duration of RA (mainly greater than 10 years), rheumatoid factor, anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies, DAS28, HAQ, presence of antinuclear antibodies (ANA), smoking and being under treatment for osteoporosis showed a statistically significant association. The interobserver correlation for the ABQ and Genant methods presented a kappa index of .9 and .92, respectively. Conclusion: In patients with RA there is a significant association with the development of VF, independent of the presence of osteoporosis. Furthermore, this research suggests that the presence of some clinical and paraclinical characteristics could be associated with the prevalence of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Age, duration of arthritis, poor prognostic markers for RA in terms of serology and functionality, as well as being in treatment for osteoporosis had statistical significance of association. This should guide the timely detection of fractures, independent of symptoms, with the respective targeted treatment in this population and thus avoid functional complications and a decrease in quality of life.


Introducción: En los pacientes con artritis reumatoide (AR) las fracturas vertebrales osteoporóticas (FVO) son de etiología multifactorial. El principal mecanismo es espontáneo y por ende la mayoría son asintomáticas. La presencia de FVO impacta en la calidad de vida de los pacientes y, en consecuencia, en la morbilidad y la mortalidad, por lo tanto, se debería evaluar de forma sistemática en esta población, más aún cuando se han reportado factores asociados. Objetivos: Los objetivos principales fueron identificar las características clínicas de osteoporosis y de mal pronóstico en AR, que podrían estar asociadas con el desarrollo de fracturas vertebrales osteoporóticas identificadas en la radiografía lateral de tórax en pacientes asintomáticos con AR, y los objetivos secundarios fueron presentar la frecuencia, la localización y la severidad de las fracturas, como también la correlación inter e intraobservador al analizar las radiografías. Metodología: Se incluyeron pacientes con diagnóstico de AR, con radiografía lateral de tórax e indicación disímil a síntomas en columna. La media de edad fue de 58 arios (RIC 21-88). Tres investigadores evaluaron 151 imágenes, de manera secuencial y estandarizada, utilizando los métodos Algorithm-Base Qualitative approach (ABQ) y de Genant. Se identificaron variables asociadas con la presencia de osteoporosis y de pobre pronóstico en AR. Posteriormente, se hizo un análisis multivariado orientado a encontrar asociación con la presencia de FVO en esta población. Resultados: Se encontraron 39 fracturas en 32/151 pacientes, en cinco de ellos se encontraron múltiples fracturas. La prevalencia de fracturas vertebrales osteoporóticas fue de 21,2%. La distribución de fracturas fue principalmente a nivel de T5, T8 y T9, con predominio de aquellas grado 1 de Genant (46%). En el análisis multivariado, la edad, la duración de la AR (principalmente mayor a 10 anos), el factor reumatoideo, los anticuerpos antipéptidos citrulinados, el Disease Activity Score-28 (DAS28), el Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), la presencia de anticuerpos antinucleares (ANA), el tabaquismo y estar en tratamiento para osteoporosis presentaron una asociación estadísticamente significativa. La correlación interobservador para los métodos ABQ y Genant presentó un índice kappa de 0,9 y 0,92, respectivamente. Conclusión: En pacientes con AR existe una asociación significativa con el desarrollo de FVO, con independencia de la presencia de osteoporosis. Además, esta investigación sugiere que la presencia de algunas características clínicas y paraclínicas podría estar asociada con la prevalencia de fracturas vertebrales osteoporóticas. La edad, la duración de la artritis, los marcadores de mal pronóstico de la AR en cuanto a serología como funcionalidad, así como estar en tratamiento para osteoporosis tuvieron significancia estadística de asociación. Esto debería guiar una detección oportuna de las fracturas, más allá de los síntomas, con el respectivo tratamiento dirigido a esta población y así evitar complicaciones funcionales y una disminución en la calidad de vida.

Methyl parathion is an organophosphorus pesticide widely employed worldwide to control pests in agricultural and domestic environments. However, due to its intensive use, high toxicity, and environmental persistence, methyl parathion is recognized as an important ecosystem and human health threat, causing severe environmental pollution events and numerous human poisoning and deaths each year. Therefore, identifying and characterizing microorganisms capable of fully degrading methyl parathion and its degradation metabolites is a crucial environmental task for the bioremediation of pesticide-polluted sites. Burkholderia zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3 is a bacterial strain isolated from agricultural soils capable of immediately hydrolyzing methyl parathion at a concentration of 50 mg/L and degrading the 100% of the released p-nitrophenol in a 12-hour lapse when cultured in minimal salt medium. In this study, a comparative proteomic analysis was conducted in the presence and absence of methyl parathion to evaluate the biological mechanisms implicated in the methyl parathion biodegradation and resistance by the strain B. zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3. In each treatment, the changes in the protein expression patterns were evaluated at three sampling times, zero, three, and nine hours through the use of two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE), and the differentially expressed proteins were identified by mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). The proteomic analysis allowed the identification of 72 proteins with differential expression, 35 proteins in the absence of the pesticide, and 37 proteins in the experimental condition in the presence of methyl parathion. The identified proteins are involved in different metabolic processes such as the carbohydrate and amino acids metabolism, carbon metabolism and energy production, fatty acids ß-oxidation, and the aromatic compounds catabolism, including enzymes of the both p-nitrophenol degradation pathways (Hydroquinone dioxygenase and Hydroxyquinol 1,2 dioxygenase), as well as the overexpression of proteins implicated in cellular damage defense mechanisms such as the response and protection of the oxidative stress, reactive oxygen species defense, detoxification of xenobiotics, and DNA repair processes. According to these data, B. zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3 overexpress different proteins related to aromatic compounds catabolism and with the p-nitrophenol  degradation pathways, the higher expression levels observed in the two subunits of the enzyme Hydroquinone dioxygenase, suggest a preferential use of the Hydroquinone metabolic pathway in the p-nitrophenol degradation process. Moreover the overexpression of several proteins implicated in the oxidative stress response, xenobiotics detoxification, and DNA damage repair reveals the mechanisms employed by B. zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3 to counteract the adverse effects caused by the methyl parathion and p-nitrophenol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Cadherin-associated protein p120 catenin regulates cell adhesion and migration in cell cultures and is required for axial elongation in embryos. Its roles in adhesion and cell migration are regulated by phosphorylation. We determined the effects of phosphorylation of six serine and three threonine residues in p120 catenin during zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryogenesis. RESULTS: We knocked down endogenous p120 catenin-δ1 with an antisense RNA-splice-site morpholino (Sp-MO) causing defects in axis elongation. These defects were rescued by co-injections of mRNAs for wildtype mouse p120 catenin-δ1-3A or various mutated forms. Several mRNAs containing serine or threonine codons singly or doubly mutated to phosphomimetic glutamic acid rescued, and some nonphosphorylatable mutants did not. CONCLUSIONS: We discovered that phosphorylation of serine residue S252 or S879 is required for convergent extension of zebrafish embryos, since rescue occurred only when these residues were mutated to glutamic acid. In addition, the phosphorylation of either S268 or S269 is required, not both, consistent with the presence of only a single one of these residues in two isoforms of zebrafish and Xenopus laevis. In summary, phosphorylation of multiple serine and threonine residues of p120 catenin activates migration of presomitic mesoderm of zebrafish embryos facilitating elongation of the dorsal axis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In 2015, the American Academy of Pediatrics published a policy statement to provide best practices on mother-infant discharge criteria, including the delivery of anticipatory guidance to mothers of healthy newborns. In our large health system with a mix of hospital types, no standard approach to or measurement of the effectiveness of newborn discharge guidance exists. At one community well-newborn unit, we aimed to increase maternal knowledge retention of newborn guidance from 69% to 90%. METHODS: Data about newborn guidance effectiveness were collected by assessing maternal knowledge retention through phone follow-up quizzes. By using quality improvement methodology and informed by American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines and curricular and adult learning theory, we standardized a multidisciplinary approach to this education. Interventions included checklist, scripts, temperature-taking demonstration, gift thermometer, staff education, car seat infant mannequin, and car seat training video for staff. RESULTS: Over a 1-year period, 333 mothers were interviewed after discharge from the well-newborn unit. Baseline data over the first 3 months (n = 93) showed poor maternal knowledge retention (69% correct answers). Common incorrect answers were on newborn urination habits, car seat harness clip positioning, and fever recognition. After restructuring the educational process, special cause was achieved after 3 months, with a shift of the average of correct answers to 83% followed by a second shift to 86%. CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of interventions to standardize newborn discharge guidance resulted in marked and sustained improvement in maternal knowledge after well-newborn unit discharge. Our next step is to enhance the process by using videos with systemwide implementation.

El nuevo coronavirus denominado SARS-COV2 causa diversas manifestaciones clínicas englobadas bajo el término COVID-19. El sistema de informe y datos conocidos por sus siglas en inglés como RADS, determinadas a partir del consenso de expertos producido por un grupo de trabajo multidisciplinario con el objetivo de mejorar la comunicación de los resultados, establece un enfoque estándar para la notificación de manifestaciones imagenológicas. El presente trabajo presenta el prototipo de aplicación CO-RADS que propone una herramienta digital sobre la base de una revisión actualizada del papel y la idoneidad de los estudios de imagenología para el diagnóstico y seguimiento de pacientes con sospecha o infección conocida de COVID-19, proporcionando terminología estandarizada de imágenes para lograr comunicar los resultados al médico de asistencia de manera clara y consistente. The new coronavirus called SARS-COV2 causes various clinical manifestations encompassed under the term COVID-19. The data and reporting system known by its acronym in English as RADS, establishes a standard approach for the notification of imaging manifestations with the aim of improving the communication of results; was determined from the consensus of experts produced by a multidisciplinary working group. This paper presents the CO-RADS application prototype that proposes a digital tool based on an updated review of the role and suitability of imaging studies for the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with suspected or known COVID-19 infection, providing standardized imaging terminology to achieve clear and consistent communication of results to the attending physician. Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum herbicide extensively used worldwide to eliminate weeds in agricultural areas. Since its market introduction in the 70's, the levels of glyphosate agricultural use have increased, mainly due to the introduction of glyphosate-resistant transgenic crops in the 90's. Glyphosate presence in the environment causes pollution, and recent findings have proposed that glyphosate exposure causes adverse effects in different organisms, including humans. In 2015, glyphosate was classified as a probable carcinogen chemical, and several other human health effects have been documented since. Environmental pollution and human health threats derived from glyphosate intensive use require the development of alternatives for its elimination and proper treatment. Bioremediation has been proposed as a suitable alternative for the treatment of glyphosate-related pollution, and several microorganisms have great potential for the biodegradation of this herbicide. The present review highlights the environmental and human health impacts related to glyphosate pollution, the proposed alternatives for its elimination through physicochemical and biological approaches, and recent studies related to glyphosate biodegradation by bacteria and fungi are also reviewed. Microbial remediation strategies have great potential for glyphosate elimination, however, additional studies are needed to characterize the mechanisms employed by the microorganisms to counteract the adverse effects generated by the glyphosate exposure.
